Challenges to Conquer 2012

I have found so many different reading challenges that I want to try to conquer this year. I will be adding the ones I do join to this page as I sign up for them.
Whenever possible, I've added the challenge graphic to the right side bar of the blog. In all cases, the name of the challenge(in black) is the link to the sign-up post I used.

All the Books of Pern Challenge 2012

I just had to join this challenge because this is the author and series that is responsible for starting me down the road to the reading addiction that I currently enjoy wholeheartedly. Here's the info and there is a list of the books on the original sign-up post(including two that are to be released in 2012).

"As readers of this blog know I was saddened to hear of Ms. McCaffrey’s death in November. As a tribute of sorts, beginning January 1, 2012, I am going to challenge myself to read all the Dragonriders of Pern series in a year. Please join me.

Details:

Runs January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012, join in anytime.
You can join anytime but only count Pern books you have read this year.
Books can be any format.
Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
Track progress here, on your blog, on goodreads or LibraryThing. Anywhere really just let me know where you are posting.
When you sign up remember your level of participation can go up but it can’t go down.
We’ll be keeping track of progress and prizes, etc. on this page.
Sign up using Mr Linky at the end of the post.

Levels:

Green– The original trilogy(or any 3)
Blue- The original trilogy plus the Harper Hall trilogy(or any 6)
Brown– Everything with Ms. McCaffrey as sole author(17)
Bronze– Everything except the ones written by Todd alone(22)
Gold – The whole lot of them(24-25)

If you want to go above and beyond I know there are some short stories out there that I have not listed. Find them, cite them, email me about them and we can have mini-challenges."

I figure I'll at have no problem doing up through 'Brown' since I own all those. 'Bronze' and 'Gold' may be more of a problem since I don't own all those yet, but we'll see. I may have to hit the library this year.



2012 Immortal Reading Challenge

Vampires, angels, demons, werewolves and fae. If you can’t pick a favourite, then that’s okay!

At UTC, we love them all! So let’s celebrate our love for all things immortal with 2012’s Immortal Reading Challenge.

Here’s the rundown:
1. The Immortals Reading Challenge runs from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. You can join at anytime from now and throughout the year. This is a 2012 challenge, so books read before January 1 will not count to your progress.
2. You pick your goal! Read as many books as you’d like for each species. This means that you can do just one category or all five or a combination of. The choice depends on you and your reading pace.
*We have chosen to have a three book per species standard. However, if this is a breeze for you, then feel free to tackle on the additional bonus entries of two more books of the same level.
3. Re-reads are acceptable.
4. Books chosen can be of any genre.
5. To participate, copy and paste this post on your blog along with the challenge button. We ask that you provide a link back to the sign-up page in case others wish to participate.
6. Readers without blogs can still participate! Keep track of your progress with Goodreads, Shelfari or LibraryThing.

My absolutely favorite type of paranormal read. Have a couple hundred already in print and ebook, and at least two dozen on my wish list for this year. One I'm really looking forward to is Shelly Laurenston's Bear Meets Girl.

2012 Men in Uniform Reading Challenge

Details:

Runs January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012 (books read prior to 1/1/12 do not count towards the challenge). You can join at anytime. Sign up on The Book Vixen’s blog.
The goal is to read as many novels that feature men in inform as you’d like. It can be a policeman, firefighter, paramedic, doctor, veterinarian, Army, Navy, Marine Corp., etc. – As long as the leading man wears some sort of uniform, it counts. See the different levels below and pick the one that works best for you. Nothing is set in stone; you can change levels at any time during the challenge.
Books can be any format (bound, eBook, audio).
Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.
Grab the reading challenge button and post this reading challenge on your blog to track your progress. Please include a link back to this sign-up post so others can join the reading challenge too. Finishing the Series Reading Challenge

It's a challenge for all those series books you started at some point and haven't finished. I know I'll start a series and read the first book, then get distracted with other books and never get back to the series. Before I know it, the series has 10 books - I get overwhelmed and don't go back to it. Now, I want to finish a couple.

Here are the rules guidelines.

1) All books that are part of a continuing series qualify (i.e. Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, James Patterson's Alex Cross, etc. etc.)

2) It doesn't matter if you have 1 or 10 books in a series to complete it, it qualifies (i.e. if you only need to read one more Sookie Stackhouse book to complete the goal, that's fine) The goal is to complete a series from wherever you are up to until the last published book.

3) The qualification period is January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. Books must be read during this time frame to count.

4) Take the button above and post about it. Use the Mr. Linky below to sign up, but make sure you link it directly to your post about this challenge.

5) If you don't have a blog, that's fine. Just leave a comment to sign up and tell us what you are reading.

6) Any format of book counts - audio, ebook, etc.

7) You should choose the series you want to finish before the challenge begins, but it isn't necessary. It's fine to change series during the year - as long as you complete whichever series it is.

8) Choose a level....

Level 1 - Complete 1 series.
Level 2 - Complete 2 series.
Level 3 - Complete 3 or more series.

Since I have several series like this I think I'll go for Level 3.



Time Travel Reading Challenge 2012

I've kept it really simple. You need to read only one book if you join at the first level, so why not try it? I am aiming to read at the second level: 4-6 books

Rules:

Challenge runs from January 1, 2012 to December 31st, 2012. You can join anytime.
Books from other challenges count as long as they are about time travel.
Books can be children's, middle-grade, YA or adult fiction.
Write a post and link it below including the URL to that sign-up post.

Levels:

Surprise Trip: 1 to 3 time travel books.
Great Adventure: 4 to 6 time travel books.
Fantastic Journey: 7 to 9 time travel books
Mind-boggling Voyage: 10 to 12 time travel books.

We'll see how many I actually read, but I plan on at least 6. I'll list them here as I read them.


Dystopia 2012

What It’s All About

The Dystopia challenge is for those who love it and for those who have never tried it. From negative utopia to plain ol’ totalitarian, there’s much to love about Dystopia and many ways it can be written.

If you’re not sure what it is check out Diva Schuylers’s post and learn all about it, but for a quick run down think of unpleasant living situations, pure dystopia being when an entity or social force is involved, but you can think outside the circle with this one.

Running Dates: 1st of January – 31st of December 2012
When Can I Sign Up: All the way up to the last two weeks of December 2012!
Crossover Genres: Our Dystopia challenge also includes Post-Apocalypse and Ecotopia (environmentally dystopian).

Further Details: Crossover challenges are fine, you can change levels at any time, this is eBook, short story, and graphic novel friendly, and you don’t need a blog to join in (read further for details).

Blogless? Don’t worry, you can sign up with your social network profile (YouTube,Twitter, GoodReads, Shelfari included), just make sure you link to your review list, shelf, tweet, or category. If you don’t have any of those feel free to comment!

I have no idea how many I will actually get read but I will aim for 15(and hope for 30). Will list them here as I read them.
